This year, the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon partnered with a local ice cream shop and a local brewery to create custom treats for runners at the finish line.
Boom Town Creamery of Oklahoma City made the collaborative flavor Marathon Magic to help promote the Run to Remember.
“When the opportunity came up to partner with the Memorial for the marathon, we said ‘yes, absolutely,’” said Boom Town Creamery CEO and Founder Angela Muir.
Muir was just thinking her creamery would offer the special flavor in its store to promote the marathon, but the marathon organizers gave her a brain freeze when they proposed something even bigger.
“They asked us to provide ice cream scoops for all the racers. and that's 15,000 people, which is awesome and very crazy for us since we are a small business,” Muir laughed. “It was a big task, but we were up for it,” she added.
Boom Town Creamery had to bring in a freezer trailer to fit all the marathon ice cream and dedicated one of its two ice cream machines to just making the marathon scoops.
The machine is running nonstop for the entire month of April just to make marathon scoops.
Marathon Magic is a brownie batter ice cream with candy-coated pieces.
The fun, bright colors match the branding of the 25th Run to Remember -- each color represents 1 of the 6 races.
Marathon Magic is a limited-time flavor and will not be available once the stores sell out.
Boom Town Creamery's ice cream cart will be selling Marathon Magic at Scissortail Park for the Finish Line Party after the Memorial Marathon.
Lively Beerworks in Oklahoma City created the other finish line treat for marathoners – beer.
“We were pretty excited about it,” said Patrick Lively, owner of Lively Beerworks. “It's an honor,” he added.
The 25th Anniversary OKC Marathon Blonde Ale is described as crisp and refreshing.
Lively Beerworks is not far from the finish line, and a lot of runners stop in after the race.
“It's one of our best days of the year,” Lively explained. “I don't know how many calories you burn in a marathon, but you got some to give,” he laughed.
OKC Marathon Blonde Ale is available to purchase at Homeland stores.
