Muskogee County District Attorney Larry Edwards has died. The longtime prosecutor and community leader passed away at his home Monday, leaving behind a legacy of fairness, ethics and deep community involvement.
Edwards had served as district attorney for nearly four years and previously worked as both a defense attorney and assistant district attorney in Tulsa and Rogers counties.
A somber mood filled the Muskogee County Courthouse as news of Edwards’ passing spread.
“He made decisions based on what he believed to be right and wrong, his own ethical standards, his own morals that he had learned,” said Assistant DA Mark Collier.
Collier, a longtime friend who first worked with Edwards in the Tulsa County District Attorney’s office under DA David Moss, will temporarily lead the office until the governor appoints a permanent replacement.
The Muskogee County District Attorney’s Office was closed Monday out of respect but is expected to reopen Tuesday.
Edwards’ community ties were a vital part of his work. Reverend Roger Cutler, president of the Muskogee County NAACP, said Edwards was always willing to work on issues together.
“We were able to talk to Larry, and that’s important as it relates to community involvement, community engagement,” said Cutler.
“One of the things that I think is very important as a community leader is that we have seats at the table,” he added. “And I always had a seat at Larry Edwards’ table.”
Edwards died at home. Because his death was unattended, the state Medical Examiner’s Office will determine an official cause of death. Muskogee police say there are no indications of foul play.
The loss is being deeply felt by those who worked closely with him.
“It’s going to be hard to cope because we were very close to him,” Collier said. “We all thought he was a great boss and a great DA and a great friend.”
