Storm season has started but the tornado sirens in Ninnekah have been on the fritz for months.

In January, it was discovered by emergency crews the towns three sirens couldn't be activated.

The system covers 25 square miles and more than 1,000 people live in Ninnekah.

“We had a system failure,” says Grady County Fire Department District Chief Buddy Myers.

The Grady County Fire Department said the company hired to fix the problem wasn't up to the task, so another company was brought in.

In the meantime, volunteer firefighters will be warning about dangerous storms by driving through neighborhoods in fire trucks, blaring sirens and horns.

They will also use the trucks' PA system to warn neighbors of a storms.

“The firefighters that would be out in this would be storm spotted trained and know how to react,” Myers said.

Myers hopes to have the three sirens back up and running in two weeks.
