The 9-year-old child was wearing Crocs, and one of them became wedged at the side of the escalator step, fire officials said. The movement of the escalator then pulled the shoe and the boy's foot into the escalator. The escalator shut down when that occurred.
Firefighters worked with escalator company representatives to make sure that any extrication efforts would not cause further movement of the escalator. Firefighters used hand tools and hydraulic extrication equipment to free the boy's foot. It was reported that the boy “did not have a scratch” once freed, and he ultimately walked to a personal vehicle to be taken for further evaluation.
