The Oklahoma Department of Corrections said an inmate with COVID-19 related symptoms has died.
The unidentified inmate is a middle-aged woman who was being housed at the Eddie Warrior Correctional Center (EWCC) serving a sentence for 85% crimes when she became sick, according to a news release sent Monday.
ODOC said the woman passed away Saturday, September 5. Due to several other health issues the medical examiner’s office will determine if COVID-19 was a significant factor in her death.
EWCC is one of several ODOC facilities declared a COVID hotspot, officials said.
To date, ODOC has received no death reports from the medical examiner’s office citing death due to COVID-19.
According to the news release, ODOC has practiced numerous measures to ensure the health of inmates and staff including mandating all wear masks.
