The Logan and Payne Counties district attorney is disgusted over a violent case of Stillwater animal abuse.
“Animal abuse crimes are just abhorrent,” District Attorney Laura Austin Thomas said. “There’s no excuse for them. There is zero excuse for them.”
According to court documents, 32-year-old Andrew Fields’ girlfriend called Stillwater animal welfare officers in 2019, worried her boyfriend had killed her dog.
After getting home from work, the girlfriend told officers she was worried about her 7-year-old, 12-pound Chihuahua named Sally. According to the report, the girlfriend said the dog’s "coat was damp from the tops of her ears to the tips of her tail." The girlfriend said she held Sally until she died later that night.
At the Stillwater Police Department, Fields told officers he did "pin Sally to the ground, then punched her three or four times and caused her to die." He said the dog "barked and whined while she was getting punched."
Fields told officers the dog “pissed him off” and he "lost his cool" because the dog went to the bathroom on the apartment floor.
“When you ask me what kind of person would do that, I mean, not a good person. It’s just that simple. It’s not somebody you want to be around do you, want your family around, I don’t want anyone around that kind of person,” Thomas said.
Last week, Fields pleaded guilty to animal abuse and an unrelated charge of assault and battery on a police officer. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail, a five-year suspended prison sentence and court fines and fees.
“It’s the policy of this office that you must do jail time on animal cruelty cases,” Austin said. “They are as difficult to us as child abuse cases are, they take a lot out of my prosecutors.”
Fields is currently in the Payne County Jail.
