Five horses are now getting medical care after Rogers County deputies said they rescued them from neglect.
Things came to a head this week after a Sheriff’s office inspection found those five horses in bad shape.
Major Coy Jenkins said it wasn't an easy day for Rogers County deputies and the Mounted Patrol unit.
“We’ve been in mud, we’re hot, it’s been quite an extensive situation for us," he said.
The horses were practically wild, and at times, downright dangerous. But despite their behavior, the horses desperately needed care and the Sheriff's office said that wasn't coming from their owners.
“We’ve been getting calls intermittently at this address for two or three years involving several different animals, not just horses," said Lieutenant Daniel Welch, a Rogers Co. Sheriff’s Office Investigator.
The team tried everything to get the animals loaded onto trailers, but the scared, untrained horses didn't make it easy. Welch believes they haven't had proper care in years, and he said the horses didn't starve only because kind neighbors fed them.
The five horses were feral, but hours of patience and care from deputies and trainers won the animals over. After a few intense setbacks, all five were loaded up on a trailer headed to a local horse veterinarian.
The horses are safe now, and they’re getting the medical attention they need.
There’s still months of investigation and legal work to be done before this case is closed.
