A Bernice police officer will be laid to rest Wednesday morning after he lost his battle to COVID-19.
The funeral service for Sgt. John Trout is at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning at Stephens Key Funeral Home in Pryor. Trout's family says anyone who would like to come is invited to attend.
Bernice Police Chief Travis Lowe says Sgt. Trout tested positive for COVID-19 at the beginning of August and unfortunately passed away last Wednesday.
Trout was in law enforcement for several years and served with the Bernice Police Department for more than four years. He leaves behind a wife and three adult children.
“It’s been a real impact on family,” Lowe said. “Both of his sons are police officers here with the town of Bernice, so understandably that has been a terrible setback and have definitely impacted our department.”
Lowe says they also lost another officer due to a health issue in the spring, so this has been a difficult year for their department. He told News On 6 that he couldn’t have asked for a better officer than Sgt. Trout.
“He was a wonderful man. John was the model police officer he truly had the compassion the patience everything we would look for in somebody that you want at a call he was that person,” Lowe said.
Immediately after the funeral, there will be a police procession from Stephen Key Funeral Home to the Spavinaw Cemetery where Sgt. Trout will be buried.
