The Cherokee Nation is celebrating 150 years of Sequoyah Schools.

Senior Conlie Smith says students were able to write letters, put in pictures and other items of today.

“We put in masks to remember the COVID years, we put In letters, each student had the option to write a letter to their future self that will be opened in 50 years, we put in yearbooks from over the years," she said.

Leaders with Cherokee Nation were able to fill the time capsule too.

Deputy Chief Bryan Warner says Sequoyah Schools is a special place for so many people.

“It’s become a school of choice, not just for Cherokee students but other Native American students all across the country, and I think that’s a big important thing for us to remember," he said.

Warner says he wants future generations to remember there's nothing they can't get through if they work together.

“That resilience is tethered into our DNA, and that is something that we will never forget and we will never shed because that is something we pass just like we pass our spirit along and we’re connected," he said.

Conlie says this project has been months in the making, and she hopes future students will get a glimpse into what it's like being a student right now.

“I’d just like them to know how it was during our time, maybe what we went through," she said.

The students who go to Sequoyah High School in March of 2072 will get to open the time capsule.
