A Jenks brewery is celebrating breast cancer survivors with a new beer.
The survivors learned how to brew beer and made signs for next month’s Race for the Cure at The Cape Brewing Company in Jenks.
The beer will be tinted pink, the color of breast cancer awareness, with hibiscus leaves.
Survivors said they hope to show the same support they’ve been given from others.
"I'm proud to be a member and support and give back as much as I can and as much as I've felt,” said Kelly Stimson, who has been a survivor for a little under a year. “I'm trying my best to be a light for other people too," she said.
The owners of the brewery have been involved with breast cancer research events for years and wanted to use their business as a way to help survivors.
"There's just been so many family members and friends who have been touched by this,” said Amy Cody, one of the owners of The Cape. “That it's just always been a really dear cause, close to my heart. And when we were blessed to have The Cape, we wanted to be able to use it for some good."
The owners said they have been inspired by the survivors’ strength.
"They are strong,” said JC Cody, one of the owners. “There's nothing holding them back. We're just giving them a day that they can just show everyone how strong they are."
Survivors said they find the strength to keep going from those around them and events like these.
"The more you're involved, the more education you find, the more stories you hear, the more experiences you can relate to,” said Michelle Clay, who has been a survivor for 21 years. “And it keeps you going," she said.
People will get the chance to try the beer, which will be called Hope Brew, after the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Tulsa on Sept. 24.
