Wind and the dry environment are playing a big part in why a fire is still burning in Rogers County, but it’s also because of the terrain.
Firefighters say 80% of the fire has been contained, but there are still several trees burning and areas where firefighters cannot reach. That’s because ravines and heavily wooded areas preventing trucks from getting through.
Chief Craig Sampson from Chelsea Fire Department says firefighters have a long night ahead of them and there’s a high probability the progress they have made today could all go away in an instant.
Firefighters say the fire has spread across more than 500 acres and nearly claimed at least two houses. There haven’t been any homes touched by the fire, but firefighters are instructing everyone to remain vigilant.
“Just keep your home cleaned around it. Excess of grass is what we’re are dealing with right now. If we can keep that clear around homes and the areas you live it would help us a lot,” Chief Sampson said.
Firefighters say the fire started at the roadway and is being investigated as arson.
This is a developing story.
