Today on the Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch, we're joined by Eli Morton and Bailey Meister from Got Wood Axe Throwing in Tulsa's Pearl District.
Bailey is an axe-throwing enthusiast. She said she can teach anyone how to throw an axe. She also works behind the scenes at axe-throwing competitions.
Eli Morton is a local axe-throwing champion. The World Axe and Knife Throwing Championships will be held in Tulsa in April this year.
Eli and Bailey shared more about the upcoming championship and Got Wood Axe Throwing on Six In The Morning.
"So I originally got involved just because it was a job. But I started throwing and I got better at it, and then ended up being really good. So I've started traveling. I've won a few tournaments. And I even got the opportunity to be on ESPN. And I ended up winning the Commissioner's Cup. And since then, it's just been you know, more gradually increasing success," Eli said.
"It started out I didn't do laundry one day. And then I wore these to League and everyone thought it was kind of funny. So I thought, 'why not make the joke last as long as possible?' And then it ended up, it just became my thing. Now I wear them everywhere. I wore them on ESPN. It's just my thing now," Eli laughed.
"I think axe-throwing is very diverse. We have a lot of people in the community from different walks of life. Did you know that 75% of our first dates are booked by women? So a lot of women don't think that it's a big, predominant sport for women but women love it. Kids love it. We have people from all different walks of life. My favorite is when we just get a random group in our shop and they didn't think they're gonna enjoy it. And then they extend their party another hour and just have a lot of fun," Bailey said.
"We have the opportunity here in Tulsa to host the World Axe Throwing Championship. That championship is massive. It's full of pros that are bids to come and throw. It is going to be on ESPN. We are hosting it at the new We Street ice center, which is at the old promenade mall. It's really cool that that venue is going to really kind of show us that they can do more than just ice skating there. It's gonna be really cool," Bailey said.
