The leadership of Wagoner County will have to figure out what is next after voters overwhelmingly rejected eight propositions on Tuesday.

Critics said some of the propositions would have made the sales tax in Wagoner County some of the highest in the country.

Most voters News On 6 talked to said the ask is too much, especially at a time when many are struggling with inflation.

Propositions one, two and three would have made taxes permanent that fund roads, the sheriff’s office and the county’s insurance requirements.

Proposition four would have created an ambulance service by cutting every fire department’s budget in the county by 50%.

Propositions five, six and seven would have created a new half-cent sales tax and the money would have gone to the courthouse, jail and county fairgrounds.

The final one would have created a 5% lodging tax on hotels, bed and breakfasts and RV parks in the unincorporated part of the county.

The propositions had a lot of opposition before election day.

Brent Watson, who said he is a CPA and lives in Wagoner County, was at an opposition rally last Saturday.

He told News On 6 he did not expect the propositions to fail by the margin that they did, ranging from 73% to 82% voting against each proposition.

Watson said he thinks it is going to be hard to pass any kind of substantial package in Wagoner County because he said taxes are already too high.

News On 6 contacted all three Wagoner County commissioners to get their reaction to the vote and to see what is next and have not heard back.
