Daughter Continues Search For Answers In The 1988 Killing Of Her Mother

A daughter’s search for her mother’s killer reaches another grim milestone.

36 years ago someone brutally stabbed 25-year-old Mary Morgan Pewitt to death in her Comanche home.

The killers left a bloody crime scene for her two young daughters to find on June 4, 1988.

Kira Lowe has spent nearly a lifetime trying to figure out who killed her mother and says she’s not giving up despite the many ups and downs in her lengthy pursuit of justice.

“People that I believe should have been on the radar or have been on the radar for quite some time,” said Lowe.

Lowe said that investigators collected DNA from her mother’s second husband and wife in late 2022.  

The couple had a volatile custody battle with her mother, Mary Morgan Pewitt, which escalated just two weeks before the murder. 

Her mother was stabbed 33 times in her Comanche home. Investigators called it a crime of passion – most likely by someone who knew her. 

Kira says the couple was awarded custody of her and her sister, plus Pewitt's estate. Investigators never took a hard look at the couple – until now.

“Why do you think they were overlooked in the beginning? I think there were so many. People that pointed to the local bad guys because it would have been easier to blame,” said Lowe.

Lowe says she is still waiting to hear if the DNA produced any tangible evidence.

Something that’s lacking in her mother’s case. 

The state failed to preserve some of the records in the case. Through a court order, Lowe requested access to medical examiner records only to find, the ull autopsy, medical examiner notes, and crime scene photos are lost.
