The Salvation Army is making sure students are ready to head back to the classroom by giving out backpacks to the kids in its Boys and Girls Club at the North Mabee location.
Friday was the last day of camp for the kids, after a busy summer full of STEM activities, crafts, and even horseback riding.
And as one chapter ends, another begins.
"We're here and we're here to meet the need of your child, so bring them on,” Branch Manager Latrice Fowlkes said.
Fowlkes said the Salvation Army will help make students' transition to the classroom a little smoother, with school supplies, lunchboxes, uniforms and underwear.
"We get a lot of kids that are needing more than just that backpack and those school supplies, the school uniform, they can't always afford those,” Fowlkes said. “So we want to be able to supply them with at least a uniform to wear to school."
Fowlkes said one way people in the community can help, is through scholarships the Salvation Army offers for students.
"There are several ways to scholarship. You can do a yearly membership, which is $40 a year or you can scholarship their after school program, $45 a week, per child,” Fowlkes said.
The backpack giveaway is at the North Mabee location until 6:00 Friday.
