The NCAA has blocked Oklahoma State football players from wearing QR code stickers on their helmets during games, reports say.
According to a press release posted to X by Jacob Unruh with the Oklahoman, Oklahoma State said every student-athlete on the roster is blocked from wearing the sticker on their football helmets.
The code links to a general team fund for student-athletes. Oklahoma State Athletics said the QR codes will still be placed throughout Boone Pickens Stadium and on its video board during the game.
The school said the NCAA interprets the QR code stickers as “advertising and/or commercial marks.”
“We disagree with the interpretation of the rule but will abide by it and work with the appropriate groups to lead on the needed change,” OSU Athletic Director Chad Weiberg said in a statement. “Our people came up with an innovative concept to raise the NIC value of our student-athletes, but ultimately, it just serves as the latest example of how college sports are evolving at a faster pace than the rule book.”
