Screaming Earth Records Opens In Owasso For Vinyl Enthusiasts

The Tulsa Metro only has a handful of vinyl record stores.

Ben Sloma, a music enthusiast, and his wife, Rosario, are opening up what he says is the only record shop in Owasso today. 

Their passion for music is one of their inspirations for opening Screaming Earth Records.

Sloma stopped by the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to talk about his new vinyl store.

"We want our shop to be a place where people can come in, hang out, and listen to music," Sloma said. "We also want to provide a place for local musicians to have to perform."

Sloma said Screaming Earth Records is a reference to a song by Tom Waits called "Earth Died Screaming."

When asked why vinyl, Sloma said, "It's the only form of media that is a direct representation of the music. The grooves in the vinyl are a physical manifestation of the music itself; the needle runs through the grooves and vibrates, recreating the feel of the music. You can feel the emotion of the artists almost like you're hearing them live. There is nothing like it."

Sloma said it was his dream to open a record shop since he had spent hours looking through stacks and daydreaming about owning a shop. He said he was lucky that his wife shared the same passion and agreed that now would be the perfect time to have a store of their own.

The pair said they are huge supporters of independent and self-distributed artists. They said they would happily work with musicians to distribute their music for sale.

The Screaming Earth Records grand opening will be on Sept. 6 at 11 a.m.

There will be a huge sale on used vinyl. Used LPs and 12-inch records will be 25% off. Used seven-inch records will be a dollar.

Sloma said there will be live music on Friday evening and throughout the next day on Saturday.

Screaming Earth Records is located at 12336 East 86th St. North in Owasso.
