Oklahoma's Army National Guard is getting national attention for its recruiting efforts.
During the month of July, Oklahoma's Army National Guard hit 108 percent of its recruiting goal. Sergeant James Kimball says as a member of Oklahoma's Recruiting and Retention National Battalion this shows the willingness of people wanting to serve their community and their country.
He says he and his fellow recruiters have a passion and drive to complete their mission despite the many obstacles they faced during the pandemic. The organization has since worked to adapt to reach more people. Sergeant Kimball says improving community relations, especially in local schools, is helping drive their numbers.
He applauds the younger generations for being willing to serve.
"They've seen the national guard present this thunderbird patch they've seen present in their communities. Whether it's been the after effect of a tornado, wildfire, deployments we've had even Covid missions getting testing facilities set up," said Kimball.
Kimball says Oklahoma ramping up the educational benefits this year has also led to more people joining the guard. Now tuition benefits can apply to public universities for undergraduate and graduate programs.
